In the heart of Boston, Lincolnshire, stands a testament to architectural and historical significance—a Grade 2 listed former courthouse built in 1840. While it exudes an air of antiquity, the need for modern conveniences, especially robust Wi-Fi connectivity, cannot be overlooked. This is where our latest project comes into play, seamlessly integrating the old with the new, without compromising the building’s historical integrity.
Challenges in the Court
Faced with the daunting task of fitting a contemporary Wi-Fi solution into a building with 3-foot-thick walls, traditional setups were off the table. These dense materials posed a significant barrier to signal penetration, a common issue in buildings of such venerable age but an obstacle we were determined to overcome.
The Ubiquiti Solution
Enter the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-M, a versatile Wi-Fi access point renowned for its ability to create a high-performance mesh network. Our choice wasn’t just about performance; it was about respecting the building’s heritage. By opting for a meshed solution linked to a UDM gateway for seamless management, we ensured a robust Wi-Fi network with minimal physical intervention to the structure.
A Touch of Ingenuity
Understanding the importance of preserving the building’s aesthetic and structural integrity, the UAP-AC-M was mounted on a custom-designed wooden stand. This not only made the installation completely portable and freestanding but also ensured that the historical fabric of the courthouse remained untouched. Furthermore, the option to wrap the UAP-AC-M allows it to blend even more discreetly into its surroundings—a nod to our commitment to aesthetics and functionality.
Expanding the Mesh
The beauty of using the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-M lies in its scalability. Multiple units can be employed to create an organised mesh network, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the building. This approach proved instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by the courthouse’s thick walls, allowing us to deliver a seamless Wi-Fi experience for both staff and guests.
From Survey to Solution
A thorough network survey laid the groundwork for this project. By meticulously mapping out signal strengths and identifying potential dead zones, we quickly devised a strategy that would provide optimal coverage. This proactive approach allowed us to tailor the mesh network precisely to the building’s unique needs, ensuring that modern connectivity did not come at the expense of historical preservation.
Bridging Time with Technology
This project stands as a testament to the possibilities that emerge when history and technology converge. By thoughtfully integrating the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-M into the former courthouse, we’ve not only enhanced its functionality but also ensured that its legacy continues unabated. It’s a vivid reminder that with the right approach, even the walls that have stood the test of time can embrace the future.
